Ingredients

Madeglucyl ™
This is a newly patented herbal ingredient designed for the dietary management of sugar control. It is made from the seeds of the Syzygium cumini plant, also known as Jambolan, Eugenia cumini. The large evergreen tree is part of the Myrtaceae family where other plants such as the eucalyptus tree and the clove spice are at home. The current extract is obtained from the seeds of the edible plant growing in Madagascar. In Madagascar traditional healers have successfully used this plant to relieve the symptoms of diabetes.
The patented product, called Madeglucyl™, has been standardized for ellagic acid. Only those batches that have the following bioassay characteristics are allowed to market: a minimum 20% reduction of blood glucose level measured 30 minutes after glucose loading. Madeglucyl™ has been tested in a variety off experimental situations and shown to be very effective in lowering abnormal glucose levels. It is highly significant to observe that even though the glucose reduction was anywhere from 20% to 27%, under no circumstances was a lowering of blood sugar activity observed for normal healthy baseline levels. Madeglucyl™, in other words, does not cause in and of itself hypoglycemia even at such an enormously high dosage as 500 mg per kilogram given over 48 days.
In experimental animal studies Madeglucyl™ caused not only a 50% reduction of glucose in the short-term, in comparison to the control group, but also caused a lowering of the mortality rate in diabetic animals by over 23% in comparison to controls. In a follow-up study of obese and diabetic mice, Madeglucyl™ was given over 53 days and led to a 44% reduction of plasma sugar levels over the control animals.
Eight clinical studies on humans were performed in Madagascar, Germany and the US showing outstanding effectiveness of this herbal preparation with a lowering of blood sugar by 35% after 15 days of treatment and up to 49% at the end of 90 days of treatment. Madeglucyl™ was also given to 20 healthy volunteers at a dose of over 3 g per day. No side effects or abnormal effects were shown throughout the trial period. In patients with type 1 diabetes, Madeglucyl™ allowed the reduction of the daily dose of insulin.
To summarize:
-
no hypoglycemic effects were seen in normal subjects
-
20% reduction in blood sugar levels were observed in healthy volunteers after a glucose load
-
40% reduction in blood sugar levels in type 2 diabetes patients
-
well tolerated even at high doses
-
no toxicity at any level administered
-
studies suggested daily dosages for maintaining healthy blood sugar levels in the range of 1.5 to 3 g per day.
Vitamin D
Research indicates that Vitamin D can help protect against diabetes. Low blood levels of Vitamin D interfere with the proper function of insulin-producing cells and predispose individuals to type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Low Vitamin D levels also result in an increase in the risk of insulin resistance, even in otherwise healthy individuals.
Vitamin D deficiency has been shown to impair insulin synthesis and secretion in human and in animal models of diabetes, suggesting a role in the development of type 2 diabetes. Furthermore, epidemiological studies suggest a link between vitamin D deficiency in early life and the later onset of type 1 diabetes. In studies in non obese diabetic mice, pharmacological doses of vitamin D have been shown to delay the onset of diabetes.
These findings deserve very close attention since in northern American cities possibly upwards of 80% of the population is deficient in vitamin D!!
Rosemary
Interestingly in the last several years, Rosemary has been found to be a powerful anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant such that it now occupies a prominent position in the regular food industry. Research has shown, however, that it is ineffective if it doesn’t have an appropriate quality control shown in the standardization of its most active ingredients of Rosmarinic and Carnosinic acids. Rosmarinic acid itself has been known for centuries to have significant health improving qualities. It can be antiseptic, astringent, hypoglycemic, fever reducing; helpful in gastrointestinal upsets, skin diseases, bacterial infections, inflammations of the urinary system, and more. Rosmarinic acid is very bio-available because of its hydrophilic nature. Studies have shown that shortly after ingestion significant quantities were detected in the brain, heart, liver, lung, muscle, spleen, and bone, with the highest concentration in the lung tissue (13 times the blood concentration).
The German Commission E has approved the use of rosemary for blood pressure problems, dyspeptic complaints, loss of appetite, and rheumatic disorders.
Experimental data and the work of the scientist R. Steiner show rosemary to be helpful in lowering the blood sugar.
5M™ Pentas™
This interesting combination of five salts and trace minerals from slate, porphyry, apatite, and sulfur has an important energetic role. Interpreting the research done by R. Steiner one can say that it conveys a sense of stability in one’s body, of inner confidence and mental clarity.
Trace Minerals
Have been included in this formulation because our soils are so depleted of trace minerals, due to a chemically based agriculture, that supplementation is required. The lack of trace nutrients is all the more vexing since practically no function in the body can progress properly without adequate amounts of trace minerals. We are offering a full spectrum of ionic trace minerals that is low in sodium and free of toxic heavy metals. These trace minerals have been obtained from the Great Salt Lake, an inland sea, where the washout from the rivers, weather, and other geological processes have produced a combination of salts that are ideal for the human physiology. The trace mineral mix is standardized and guaranteed to contain magnesium, boron (!), selenium, lithium, chloride, and more than 70 other trace elements.
Trace amounts of the gemstones Emerald and Topaz have been added in order to utilize this unique natural occurrence of quartz. The quartz or silica is well known to be indispensable for many connective tissue processes and especially the sense organs in the human body.
Biotin
Biotin is a secondary B-vitamin with important functions in fat metabolism and may be involved in the synthesis and release of insulin. Preliminary studies in both animals and people suggest that biotin may help improve blood sugar and lipid control in those with diabetes, particularly type 2 diabetes.
Chromium
The average American diet predisposes to chromium deficiency due to its emphasis on junk foods. Current estimates show that 80% of Americans are lacking in this essential mineral nutrient. Studies have shown that Chromium helps cells respond properly to naturally produced insulin. The mechanism by which chromium improves glucose levels may be, among others that chromium improves the ability of receptors on the cell walls to bind insulin to the cells and thus allow the more efficient transport of glucose into the cells.
We use the Chromium 454 form, a more water soluble and bio-available form. It is available in a food derived organic carrier. Most other commercially available chromium supplements are SYNTHETIC complexes bound to various ligands as salts. The most popular of these products tend to be expensive, water insoluble, and of questionable effectiveness.
*
Impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) is NOT a disease. It is a pre diabetic condition characterized by insulin resistance and correspondingly high sugar levels. These sugar levels have not yet reached the levels that would constitute diabetes. This pre diabetic phase can last a long time. Once it is present though, the chances of developing diabetes type II are at least 1 in 3 within 10 years. IGT, according to the American diabetes Association (ADA), is a condition characterized by a serum glucose concentration of 140- 190 mg/dl two hours after an oral glucose challenge. This is not high enough to meet the diagnostic criteria for diabetes, which is a sugar level over 200 mg/dl.
Several characteristics have been recognized as associated with a greater risk of progression from IGT to diabetes:
-
generally higher glucose levels than normal
-
higher fasting plasma insulin levels
-
lower plasma insulin levels in response to a glucose load
-
obesity
-
age
Once again, at present IGT is not considered a disease in its own right but it is a very significant risk category for developing diabetes in the future and developing those complications that are attributed to diabetes. People that have high glucose levels are at greater risk for: heart disease, stroke, death from all causes, circulatory problems of the lower extremities, etc. Patients that present with unexpected strokes, heart attacks, and other complications have been found to have an unusually high incidence of IGT.
In recent epidemiologic studies, the incidence of IGT was found to be surprisingly high. Among nearly 2600 persons tested with a mean age of 54 years, approximately 18% had IGT. In the population older than 65 years the rates were even higher, reaching 46%. In the population with specific myocardial infarction (heart attack) the rates went up as high as 65%. Considering these numbers, it becomes evident why careful attention to this particular problem would be of enormous importance to the general health of both adults and youngsters.
Both common sense and medical studies show that the best way to maintain a healthy blood sugar is through physical exercise and appropriate diet. In a recent US diabetes prevention program, an intensive lifestyle intervention among IGT people reduced the diabetes incidence by 58% compared with a placebo. In those not capable, or not willing to introduce a significant lifestyle change, drug therapy, for example, with metformin and others were shown to be able to prevent the onset of diabetes in subjects with IGT. Interestingly however, the ADA(American Diabetes Association) does not recommend the drug therapy because of the limited efficacy of treatment with oral agents, the potential for adverse drug reactions, the lack of data showing a reduction of the vascular complications of diabetes in this patient population and lastly, insufficient assessments of cost effectiveness.
There is not sufficient evidence yet to definitively answer the question whether treatments with "natural supplementation" would be a viable alternative to treatment with single drugs. There is no question however that lowering the blood sugar and lowering insulin resistance through a reduction of obesity and normalization of sugar levels by means of lifestyle changes and natural supplements would be beneficial.
